This VE Day assembly for primary schools introduces pupils to Victory in Europe Day and why it is still remembered today. Through discussion and reflection, children explore the values of service and unity, thinking about how people came together during difficult times and how these values can be shown in our own school community.

What is VE Day?
VE Day (Victory in Europe Day) marks the end of World War II in Europe on 8th May 1945, when Germany surrendered and people across Britain celebrated peace after almost six years of war. Streets were filled with parties, flags and music, as families and communities came together to mark the end of a long and difficult time.
Although the war had not yet ended across the whole world, VE Day was a moment of great relief and hope. It is still remembered today as a time to reflect on the sacrifices people made, the importance of peace, and the way communities can come together in times of challenge.
For children, VE Day provides an opportunity to explore themes such as service, unity and remembrance, helping them to understand why we continue to mark this important event and how its values can still be seen in our lives today.
Why do we still remember VE Day?
VE Day is still remembered today as a way of honouring those who lived through the war and reflecting on the importance of peace. It reminds us that even in the most difficult times, people can come together, support one another and build a better future.
